I'm playing 40d to get reacquainted so I can teach my friend how to play.  He wants to play but the new versions are so fucked up that he got frustrated and quit.

Going back to basics, and damn, maybe I'll stay back here.  Remembering why I got into dorfs in the first place.

Things are simpler, everything works, your dwarves have skills and the equipment to go with them, enemies are enemies and friends are friends, caves have actual monsters in them that want to kill you instead of running away and crying.

Everything works.  As much as I miss being able to aim my shots, I miss everything actually working the way it's supposed to much more.  40d is like a cottage in the woods.  There's not much, but it's cozy and nostalgic.  The new versions are like a mansion that's only half built.  You can tell it'll be awesome in a few years but right now it's open to the elements, there's scaffolds everywhere, the doors and the roof are just tarps, it's a mess.

im fairly sure that everything running away and crying was fixed in the newest version.
then again, the newest version came out a week ago or something like that so it's still hella buggy (and no therapist ;-;)

that doesnt mean there's not a lot of other dumb bugs left, i can see where you're coming from :v

From the first line, I assumed you were talking about a therapist that was helping you with some depression or something similar. Then I read the second two sentences and was really confused for a second until I realized that you're talking about Dwarf therapist.

Last time I gave it a shot, having not played DF in ages, I forgot to set up a drawbridge and move everything inside before anything else, so a werechameleon bit our manager and led to a tantrum spiral. !!Fun!! times.

Same here with a werepanther. Was left with one werepanther (which I'd contained) and one other member - down maybe 11 dorfs. That was a lonely time for the soon-to-be Mountain Homes.
