Also the lack of compatibility. If there was as many games for Linux as Windows, I'd have grabbed Linux.
Yeah, only thing stopping me from making an effort to switch to Linux is compatibility issues. I have a bunch of programs I'm used to using as well as games I like to play, and I can't be arsed to take the initiative to see what's compatible and what isn't and what alternatives I could find and use.

Cleaned half my desk today. Going to get the other half tomorrow. I feel pretty pleased with myself now.

"Cleaning", in this case, meaning removing three or four years of stray drawings, long overdue forgotten schoolwork, several-year old advertisements, long-expired coupons, and the occasional unopened business letter. All that's left now (on this half, anyway) are my computer monitor and one speaker, a few CD cases, some spare change, a couple of stray knickknacks, and half a pound or so of scrap paper and writing utensils.

Tomorrow's going to be a doozy, though, the pile of paper on that half looks like it could be knocked over by a stiff breeze.

If-when I acquire a desk, I am at least going to make sure I have neat piles...

This is not a bad idea.  If only there was semi-decent floor available.

Linux is no more difficult to set up than most versions of Windows.
Well I know that, and most computer people know that, but there's something about command lines that just scares people. (Also the maintenance aspect of keeping libraries working and all that jazz can get much worse over the long run than anything windows or macs have to deal with, albeit at the cost of actually letting you fix things instead of your options just being "it's broke, wait for them to fix it"). :P
But as we've learned from games console apologists, choice is bad and it's better to be stuck with something sub-par than have the choice of improving it in some way.

Does it count as piles if you use an upper part (above the actual desk area) to stack things?

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

If the "stacks" are not neat and tidy, they may be referred to as piles at will, regardless of location.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
