The praise wasn't the problem. Saying "You actively behave like a decent human being..." would have been totally fine. The problem was that because you said "You are the only person on here who actively behaves like a decent human being..." it automatically takes your statement and automatically implies a personal insult against every single other poster on the board.

It's just like how saying "you are better than the average person" is a fine thing to say, but "you are better than the average Jew" would not be, because one is comparing you against a specific person or group of people (and thus being equivalent to saying "you are worse than me") while the other does not.

So feel free to praise people, just make sure that any comparisons made are done against hypothetical averages and whatnot rather than calling out specific people or groups:
