The opposite of night.  "It is day" mean's the sun's shining, whereas "a day" is 24 hours.

I guess I'm just used to having a separate word for the full 24-hour cycle, that being "sootky" (сутки) in Russian.

In Finnish, the word for the 24-hour cycle is 'vuorokausi'. The word for day, as in the reign of the Sun, is 'päivä'. However, in some contexts, 'päivä' can also refer to the 24-hour cycle. Cue confusion.

E: In English, 'solar day' only refers to a 24-hour period (on Earth).

E2: Wikipedia also recommends the Greek word 'nychthemeron' to be used in English.

Yeah, it's the same in Russian. Day (den', день) can refer to either the daylight hours, or to a 24-hour cycle. Сутки refers to the 24-hour cycle only.

Snoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow! Everything outside is white and fluffy, but the leaves are still vaguely green. And since it's 6:30 AM here, the sky is a sort of gentle grey-blue-white color, not like the usual brilliant winter white, but better somehow. I haven't slept all night again, and I have a test today... But I'm inexplicably happy for some reason. I guess this feeling will pass soon, but that's alright too.
