In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE YESTERDAY!!!
Oh god....my daughter must never hear of this, or *I* will never hear the end of it. (She makes my Star Wars geekdom look like "Meh, I watched a couple of those." AND SHE'S 8.)

Also, we'd totally fight over who gets to control it.

Sleep paralysis is fucking terrifying. Bravery has nothing to do with it.
Not sure if I'd call it fucking terrifying, but it's certainly zero sorts of pleasant. @C, please don't induce suffering on yourself as some sort of silly benchmark of suffering exposure sort of nonsense. No real benefit from experiencing sleep paralysis. Is just undergoing unpleasantness you can't do anything about.

Ain't no shame in freaking the hell out a bit if you experience it, though. Or being scared of it or whatev'. None at all. M'just glad my experiences with it have been few and short, heh. Ruddy unpleasant, it is.

Never experienced it, myself, which I supposed I can also be happy about.

But I've also never experienced any lucid dream at all, or any especially pleasant dream of any kind ever.
Yeah, sleep paralysis is very not fun. I haven't ever had the kind with hallucinations, but if you did, and especially if you didn't know what was going on, I imagine it could very very easily pass into the fucking terrifying zone.

If sleep paralysis isn't terrifying than you must be either very lucky or have a way stronger constitution than average due to a certain mechanism that is happening. Basically our bodies are programmed to err on the side of caution in unknown stimuli. Essentially if we don't know if something is friend or foe, then we by default categorize it as a foe. In the majority of sleep paralysis cases this mechanism basically goes into hyperdrive due to the part of your brain that analyzes what stuff is not working at full capacity while you are still partly asleep, meaning that everything that is even the slightest bit unknown gets categorized as a "foe" by the "err on the side of caution" rule.

Thus, from your brain's point of view you have essentially been scooped from your safe bed and been thrown into a death world where everything is trying to kill you, which, to be fair, is a pretty "fucking terrifying" prospect. :P

In about an hour or so, I'm going to be heading up north to NY to attend a relative's wedding (tagging along with the rest of the family). And while we're there, we're going to check out our childhood home(town), and such. Also, ROAD TRIP! Got everything set to go, besides ideas for an artist's block I've been having; bringing my sketchpads just in case. Other than that, it's gonna be a fun dozen+ hours driving up there.

So basically, I'm not going to be around here for a good chunk of time (until Monday/Tuesday, I'll be back). So here's a goodbye for now.

A person died and left their books to the archive I volunteer in. Books not taken by the archive are free grazing for all.

Many new books get.

Kill the nonconformers, then decide whether to be optimistic or just write poetry
