Scipio was pretty great. Too bad he never had enough political leverage or he'd have had a happier end.

In regards to stories about ancient strategies and etc, I do remember reading that a Sung General in ancient china, while defending the city of  Yutai against the emperor Tai Wu's troops, got requested some wine from the emperor (something customary amongst military enemies in ancient china, it seems). The Sung general sent him a pot full of urine instead, which enraged the emperor and caused him to relentlessly attack the city's walls day after day. After some weeks, the emperor's troops were greatly diminished and exhausted, and they had to pull back.

My team leader stayed on my case the past three days, and sure enough I pulled out an unexpected win for the team at the last second.  Pretty crazy considering basically nothing came in last week (which was driving me mad with anticipation and confidence issues...).  I have a great team leader and I work a whole lot better when he's keeping me on task on the big stuff.  The normal day-to-day I can handle fine...  But honestly I crave recognition.  And now I feel *amazing*.
Time to break out some ice cold... water.  I froze a gallon and have it slowly thawing in my fridge, it's so nice.  Spinach and tofu and sourdough too.  I *have* a whole box of wine that's just sitting there unopened because I don't feel like it.  Probably going for another hike after I eat, what is happening

(maybe if I get fit enough during this high, I won't crash so bad later!)

After some weeks, the emperor's troops were greatly diminished and exhausted, and they had to pull back.
And there was the guy (I honestly cannot remember his name. Pretty sure it was in China, though) that had very few men to defend a city. So he left the gates open and played an instrument in it. The guys SUPPOSED to be besieging thought it was a trap and left.
Zhuge Liang, commonly considered the preeminent strategist of the Three Kingdoms era.  Unfortunately, that example, impressive as it may be, was fictional.  There are other historically-attested examples of the Empty Fort strategy, but few quite so, ah, we'll call it "daring".

But, then again, my favorite Oriental general was actually famed for his actions as an admiral, to the point where few remember that his career began as a general against the Jurchen with absolutely no naval experience whatsoever.  Specifically, Yi Sun-shin, whose most famous victory was conducted by taking the shattered remnants of the Korean fleet - a grand total of 13 ships and 200 sailors left from a force that had once been almost 170 ships strong - and not only rallied them to the banner, but led them to an absolutely crushing victory against against over 300 ships while losing only 10 sailors and precisely zero ships at Myeongnyang.  So, "daring" is all too frequently the child of "necessity."

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I had an amazing idea for a TV show whilst in the shower earlier. I was going to share it in the Laugh thread, but I think I might pitch it to my brother instead.
Don't worry, I'll be sure to post a link to the pilot episode if/when it happens. :P
