I was looking through all the various kinds of angry music I have open in different tabs, trying to decide what to listen to, until I realised... this morning isn't an angry music morning, this morning is a morning for ol'-timey, rag-timey, good timey jazz. :))

My older brother drives a semi truck for his company every now and again. The other day while driving a semi loaded with 80,000 pounds on the interstate, going 60 Miles an hour, a large RV in front of him started to slam on their brakes. Now, the problem with semi's is that they don't really break all that easily, especially with big loads. He looked to see if he could pull into the left lane, and saw cars blocking his way. So he decided to pull onto the shoulder. This would have been fine if it weren't for the RV also pulling onto the shoulder at the exact same time. So my brother had to pull off the road entirely. In doing so, he flipped the semi. The cab ended up fairly well crushed, seeming to imply that there was not much of a chance of anyone getting out alright. My brother stepped out of that semi with one long scratch on his back. And that was it. The RV that held two families in front of him apparently braked for a dog on the road. The fact that he walked out of there just fine was something that made me pretty damn happy.
Was the entire tractor-trailer-load combo 80,000 pounds, or just the load itself? Because if the latter, holy crap but that's heavy o_o

Glad to hear that everyone made it out of that potential disaster. I've seen plenty of big rig wrecks and some of them you can just tell had fatalities.

It's basically the same as a regular course AFAIK. Baically, you do study over the internet instead of going in to a university lecture or whatever. Exactly what format the studies and exams take depends on the institution, but the premise is the same.

This isn't just a course, either, the entire degree program is wholly online -- even if you live on campus you take classes online. It's a large, fairly well-known research-oriented state university, as well, not some shady diploma mill.

But yes, it's pretty much the same as traditional courses except with greater scheduling flexibility for everyone. Even a lot of classroom-taught courses in U.S. universities are incorporating a pretty heavy online component these days. Most of the ones I took toward the tail end of my Bachelor's had online quizzes, paper submission, grading, &c., the vast majority of which is oriented around cutting down on wasted instruction time.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Questionable Content had a new character who I assumed was a one-off bouncer:
http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3003

And even though she has a silly sarcastic name and the author mentions that he likes her...  I really like her too.
Probably because deadpan badass and as close to androgynous as one could expect.
Then the following page made it clear that we'd be seeing more of them, and just yesss.
