Bay12 hasn't affected my views on religion or politics too much (it probably has, in ways I don't realize, because that's how life is) but it has allowed me to get to know some people I probably wouldn't have associated with before.

Bay12 hasn't affected my views at all - I was already a liberal before I joined.

If anything, Bay12 may have made me more conservative - but that may well have been just you, Knit.
To me this is a place to sharpen ideas, to refine them; to see which ones hold water and which ones have holes. It's done a very good job as far as I can tell.

Its funny you should say that.  That is also true of conservatives. :P

And even centrists tend to get that 'extreme' vibe.
I consider the political alignment of the internet as a whole "racemic". An equal mix of extreme right and left that gives off the illusion of centrism.Just that the sites I frequent trend left.

I've also shifted right politically over the last few years, and used to be pretty left-wing. First, I think it's partly growing up and making peace with the establishment. Second, I've (more recently) grown very disillusioned with the way too many "leftist" movements have become more about identity politics and privilege checking than actual civil liberties and economic equality. Third, I've realized that while current economic policy on the whole could stand to shift left a ways, extreme socialist-type policies aren't as great as the intellectual hype suggests.

At this point my politics can be summed up "center-very-slightly-left libertarian".

I've actually become lest liberal with B12, considering I was a rabidly far-left anarchist when I joined. Now I just settle for sitting in the middle (though a bit more to left than right) and dreaming of this being a monarchy again.

Huh. TIL there was a sovereign Kingdom (Empire?) of Brazil.

Even if you found a suitable opening, I doubt it would prove all too satisfying. And it might leave some nasty wounds, depending on the moral high ground's geology.

LOL @ how it describes the rights of people there.

'Unlike most of the neighboring Hispanic American republics, Brazil had political stability, vibrant economic growth, constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech and respect for civil rights of its subjects, albeit with legal restrictions on women and slaves, the latter regarded as property and not citizens. '

Its just interesting how the authors of the page went for those first.  *because they are evaluating that culture next to our own.*
