Pliny sounds familiar.  I think he is one of the guys that I laugh at in my AP European History textbook.

I believe Pliny the Elder was a classical Roman author. He might have been the one who wrote a book on farming techniques.

Possibly my Latin class then.  Could still be AP Euro since we have to read a lot of ancient texts, both from the time period we are studying and from thousands of years before said time period.  But probably my Latin class.  Either way, I remember him from somewhere.

I'm reading the Elder's Natural History, to clear that up. Fun stuff.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

And doesn't he devote almost half of the section on anthropology to talking about how awesome Julius Caesar and Hippocrates were?

I... Think the interview went well.  The person said they were looking for someone local, but contacted me specifically because they were impressed with my experience.
