I think you give tabletop games too much praise (relative to other things).
That kind of shit could totally happen in a film. It would just have to be an adaptation from another successful piece of media so that whoever's paying for the production doesn't get scared of people not liking it. Also it would be used as angst material the entire way through the rest of the story.
