It's time for another exciting episode of
Andux's Awkward Anxiety Adventures!
Background: There's
this girl in my Bio class; she mostly keeps to herself, tends to sit apart from other people, so I think to myself: "Self, she is clearly
cute a kindred spirit in awkward-outsiderness; we should attempt to socialize."
So,
today, after lunch, I see her sitting by herself on a couch in the student break area; I think to myself, "A-ha, now's my chance! I'll go over, introduce myself, and ask if I can join her." Gathering my nerve, I stride boldly to
wards the bulletin board on the wall ~15 feet away from her; I spend the next few minutes feigning a sudden intense interest in the assortment of stupid jokes, quotations, and infographics posted thereon. I notice her glancing curiously in my direction a few times. After spending another 15 minutes or so standing around like a jackass, I finally say, "To hell with it," and just walk over (in the right direction, this time).
Me: "Um, hey, uh, do you mind if I sit here?"
Her: "Go for it!"
I am somewhat taken aback; I was not expecting quite so positive a response.
I sit. Well, now what? Introductions, I suppose:
Me: "Uh, it's <her name>, right?"
She responds affirmatively, laughing; amused, perhaps, by my earlier awkward antics?
Me: "I'm <my name>."
She says nothing.
I'm not sure how to proceed at this point; I consider asking her what she's listening to (she has earbuds in), but about this time, my anxiety--having recovered, now, from the sudden shock of acceptance--is all like, "Nope, that's enough social interaction for one day. She wants to hear her music, not you yapping." After a minute or so of awkward silence, I pull out my own MP3 player; we just sit there, quietly tethered to our devices, until it's time to head to class.
She said something to me as she got up to leave, but I couldn't make it out over the music.
I hope it wasn't anything important.
