I'm getting some major itch for upgrades on my computer... my core components about 3-4 years old.  It's about time.

I am finally replacing my main hard drive, which is like 7 years old, and I think it's starting to develop bad sectors.

I'm replacing it with a 500 GB SSD my wife is getting me for our 10th anniversary on Friday.

Newscrubs. My machine is from like '08, and it runs DF like if I had used Stephen Hawking's brain (excluding the part fucked up by that disease) as a processor. That is, marvelously.

I also have an '05 Compaq, which sucks (but runs.)

*sigh* if only we could help people with such conditions by at least giving them the gift of mind-operated video games to play. Steven hawking would probably be scary good at dwarf fortress.

IIRC AMD doesn't have the same definition of "core" as most people do, so not really that impressive, no. A 4-core i5 would be more powerful.

The game is bottlenecked by RAM hard (like, I could get a CPU 20% as powerful and it would run the same), so I don't think that matters.

Well, two, technically, seeing as the renderer is on a separate thread. Not that rendering ASCII is particularly hardware intensive in the first place.

But having multiple cores allows you to run multiple instances of df at the same time!

Which is arguably useless unless you're doing some wacky science and have amazing powers of multitasking.
