I've only read The Hobbit and the LotR trilorgy. Gonna wait a little longer before taking on the Silmarillion.

Trilorgy is a slightly worrying word. It implies levels of debauchery that I'm not sure I'm comfortable with.

And another happy, I have submitted a piece of writing to a magazine. I'm gonna be famous! More likely rejected, but FAMOUS!

Yeah, it was just because LotR is sometimes used to indicate the universe instead of the three books.

Do I hear people vowing to read the Silmarillion?

DON'T DO IT. IT IS HELL. IT READS LIKE THE BIBLE.

Read Unfinished Tales, though.

That has The Adventures Of Tom Bombadil in it.

Silmarillion is good! Admittedly, the start is rather Goddy, but the rest is good!

That reads even more like the Bible... and I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually have the Adventures of Tom Bombadil, since that was actually released earlier.

It does have the Lay of Turin Turambar, though... just like the Silmarillion and the standalone book that happens to be the Lay, but whatever.

Hey, it doesn't read much like the Bible (in my opinion). Parts of it are really heavy, but that's kind of to be expected. It's really good, though!

Yeah, whilst Silmarillion isn't super enjoyable as LoTR series, it's still good if you're that kind of person who doesn't mind heaps of details.

I'm a hundred pages in and it feels like watching paint dry would be more entertaining on a regular basis.

It probably doesn't help I'm doing it for an outside reading project.

I loved the Silmarillion, but I wouldn't call it an engaging work of prose so much as a magical history/myth book. If you don't enjoy that sort of storytelling, it's not gonna be your thing.

Also giant book sale. I picked up some classics, so we'll see how that goes. Such Aristotle, v. Euclid. Wow. Also spotted a really good condition copy of Temple of Elemental Evil that I'm going to go back and look for on Monday, when everything's 75% off (it was way out of my price range at full price).

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

It's very much a collection of histories rather than a drama; not boring, but quite dry.

Apparently Patchy Quest lives again, and the author is focusing on the actual plot instead of random sidequests and yukkuri bullshit.
