It usually indicates a pairing. As in, y'know. Relationship. Sometimes sexual, usually at-least romantic. If there's no caveats (specified friendship, direct statement of no romance, etc.), it probably means they at least want to get it on.

Why do fanfics have to ruin things like that?

*shrugs vaguely* People have their kinks. Plus some write it just for the hell of it -- mess with people, see if they can craft a scenario in which the situation is actually (at least somewhat) believable (let's be honest, if you can sell a bilbo/gandalf relationship to an even remotely discerning reader, you can sell goddamn anything. It's good writing practice.), etc., so forth, so on. At least nomenclature like that fooXfoo stuff lets them warn readers what they're getting into. Most print novels aren't nearly so considerate, and then you run into an incestuous hermaphroditic orgy in your formerly kind and loving sci-fi and what the hell.

Because fans are always fickle, and they love the original source material, except it doesn't have enough sex.

So I played the D&D session, which was a ton of fun.

It started out with us stripped, bound, and gagged, after a bunch of 'ninjas' chloroformed (or whatevered) us, so I got to make use of my feats to vandalise a statue with Unseen Servant so I could cut my bonds. Then, gratuitous magic missiles. 3d4 + 3 for the win!

Some time late, a five-by-five secret compartment in the wall opened up, to reveal five ghouls. I rolled high initiative. Burning Hands for 5d4 damage obliterated all but one of them, which was promptly removed by the other spellcaster (who somehow has an item of infinite acid orb).

We finished the session whilst trying to keep a blue dragon happy to prevent it from eating us, since a mild manifestation of its displeasure was enough to hit my character for more than a quarter of his health.

Also, tons of other stuff in between, including the paladin ferrying us up a cliff on a celestial griffin and the wild dwarf barbarian blowing his nose on the cloth on an altar of some deity or other.

Tiru already took the alignment test and got True Good, so no smiting evil.
I don't think she'd be good at smiting evil, since then you can't rehabilitate them.

But yes, Smite Fungus has no alignment restrictions, and is very useful.
I don't notice them much anymore since I lost my smell, so I've become immune to a lot of fungal spells.
