Is it wrong for me to prefer 3.5e over 4e explicitly because of how unbalanced, quirky, and prone to random happenstance it is, rather than for more valid reasons (like "The classes aren't all identical in everything except fluff descriptions of how they do the same things.")? On that note, let's hear it for the potential of 5e!

It's sort of perverse, but half of the fun for me is designing characters that are, taken as a party whole, vaguely within the same level of brokenness. Rollplay as a facilitating force for roleplay, if you will; if I wanted a vacuum where the mechanical uniqueness of my character was irrelevant in the face of their personal uniqueness, there are plenty of other ways to go about it. It's actually sort of like games like Aurora and DF in that sense, where random shit happening in the game becomes the plot, rather than the plot dictating what happens in the game. :/

OTOH 4e is infinitely easier for inducting new players and not having massive arguments and/or headaches, methinks.

It's funny you mentioned that because a friend who knows even less about it than me is possibly making a campaign for a different thing that we'll end up playing with some other people. Woo for ridiculous fun!

-character generation was simplified so that people with intelligence scores of 5 can play
-they removed the four coolest alignments
-POWERS suck because all the classes are basically spellcasters now, not to mention that it makes it a good deal harder to make characters completely original
-balancing apparently means 'make everything the same' to WotC
-and of course the artwork went from 3.5's "oh hey guys these people are either warriors with half-decent armor that looks cool, these people are spellcasters and they're wearing goofy clothes" to "OH GUISE LOOK WE CAN MAKE THE MOST INEFFICIENT ARMOR IN THE WORLD FOR A +7 AC BONUS"
-they tried to cut a lot of the fluff, particularly buying the traditional assload of items in favor of giving you everything you need in a handy starter pack
-who could forget good old 'ooh big hit points good dur dur' syndrome

now check my lazy for-points

-game is easier to introduce noobs to (although it can still brainwash them with powers and stuff)
-is dnd

therefore 4e = scrub dnd

also also Flying Dice ninja makes similar points to why I like 3.5
except they're backward, i.e. I like playing good-broken classes but smashing all their toys for lulz (see: all my sorcerers, my lone wizard, my selecting of a 4th tier class twice, my bard is the exception to the matter) and also because 3.5 is free stuff

also i kinda regret oocafqt'ing the joke about lsp being banned (from the dream thread) it probably has something to do with this

I'm a bit late to the "disguising character as another character type" discussion, but my favorite idea is disguising a 3.5 sorcerer as a wizard.

In a related happy, I found my dad's original AD&D books whilst cleaning. I'm seriously considering running a forum game out of them.
