A system that I think would be great for a gladiator-themed campaign would be... The Riddle of Steel, or more likely its successor whose title I can't remember. Highly lethal, strategic battles with crazily indepth combat rules, whilst still being simple enough that a lazy sod like me could figure them out. :)

>First meeting of lab for a computer class
>Our first shot at the program we were supposed to write is doing crazy nonsense
>Call over the TA
>He's never seen that particular nonsense before
>None of us know what's going on
>Ask the group if I can take a shot at rewriting the code
>"Yeah sure"
>Pull pseudocode next to keyboard and get started from scratch
>Suddenly spaghetti starts falling out of my pockets
>It's all over the screen
>Incrementing a counter that I go on never to use
>Manually write loops to print characters one at a time*
>Checking an impossible condition to see if I need to break a loop
>TA literally says, "Why would you do this?"
>New version works as intended the first time

I think it's going to be a good semester.

*While it made the code less easily readable, which is ultimately a bad thing, I'm still pretty sure THIS was more efficient than the expected strategy, which involved creating an extra array to hold the particular substring we wanted to print, and overwriting it every iteration. This being embedded systems, that might actually be relevant one day, although it certainly wasn't here. And I still say it was more intuitive, given the particular task at hand >__________>

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

It's a 4chan term. Basically means things are feeling so awkward, embarrassing, and absurd that it's as if spaghetti randomly started falling out of your pockets.

So...
Bauglir felt absurd and it was all over the screen?
Or his code was all over the screen? o_O

Because what I got was 'Total Victory Success' from that report there.

Thanks Furtuka. I just couldn't figure out what spaghetti was doing in a computer programming story without some sort of explanation X_x

See, it's a pun, because "spaghetti code" is a term for code that's hard to follow because of its bizarre structure. So it was a spaghetti story about spaghetti code.

Spaghetti Code (Spah-get-i Code) [Noun]: A large block of undocumented code on a single line, which could be broken into multiple easier to read lines if the original programmer were around to interpret it. See also: Dilbert.

Spaghetti has specific origins in this context to the song "Lose Yourself" Eminem, a power anthem from the perspective of a young aspiring rapper named Rabbit, the protagonist of Eminem's movie 8 Mile. While the song is meant to be powerful and uplifting, one particular line comparing the nervous Rabbit's arms to limp spaghetti before he engaged in a rap battle was picked up as being unintentionally hilarious. Probably because hardcore Eminem just blurts out "ARMS SPAGHETTI" in a rap song.

Ah yes, 8 Mile. The rap battle at the end is awesome.

Actually, a homebrew D&D setting based in mythological Greece/Mediterranean Sea sounds really fun, especially if you go the full distance with the worldbuilding and mythology. Your lands over the horizon would be expies of Egypt, Britannia, and the Persian Empire.
Yeah, that basically is what Mazes and Minotaurs is (at least I think they have some sort of Britannia/Celtic expy, though I can't recall any off hand), run on a modified D&D Basic base made as a playable parody (it tries to answer the question of what D&D would be like if Gary Gygax into Ancient Greece instead of Medieval times).

-snip-

Oh, I always thought he was saying "Mom's spaghetti". It always seemed like a decidedly unbadass thing to include in a rap song.
