I wear a tie to my volunteer work as an archivist. Striped is the way, and not those narrow little beasties either. A proper, wider tie.

Skinny ties are a thing.

A stupid thing

I like ties. I usually don't wear them, but they still look cool.

Yes, yes, ties are nice.

If they're proper things, and not the scourge that is the skinny tie.

There are people who do well with patterned ties. I am not one of them. I'd wager Janet is, for instance. I should clarify, I don't hate ties in the abstract, I hate wearing them because they don't gel with me in particular very well, and patterned ones are doubly bad on me.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Teachers and related school personnel can typically get away well with patterned ties. My old science teacher and the superintendent of my school pulled it off.

Regular businessmen are another matter. Typically, they only work well if the tie echoes the personality of the tie-wearer.

I'll probably end up getting a bunch of my dad's shirts this coming year. Bowties and tweedery, ho!

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

I had an English teacher who had every imaginable tie. There were funny ones, sad ones, one with Shakespeare's will written on it, some with witty catchphrase imaginable.

He was a great man.

Speaking of teachers, I had a French teacher a few years back who wore a new tie almost every week. Every one had some kind of fancy pattern or print on it. He wasn't especially great, but he gave me passing marks, so he's alright in my book.

Apparently Google has a service where you can search for old newspapers.

Headline of the Bluffton Chronicle, July 1, 1914:

Much Beer Confiscated in Raids Made Today

That was more important than the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, reported on the second page.

Cool. You know what would be even cooler? If you could actually read those letters.

You can zoom in to read the articles by clicking on a headline. But if you're saying you can't read old-timey print, I can't help you.

No, just very low resolution.
