I made a silly, unrealistic abstraction in DF (molybdenum+iron=steel) instead of going full simulation (looking up the physical properties of molybdenum-steel alloys) and I didn't literally die.

It still feels off, though. At least I got an excuse to include Rhenium.

The initial explosion causes absolute enormous amounts of radiation, but it's any waste material left over that will continue to be radioactive. AFAIK nuclear weapons are generally designed to minimise waste, but many of them were made so long ago it's not at all for certain.

Actually, the U.S. has almost no nuclear weapons older than thirty years, the so called 'disarmament' treaty actualy only stipulates the dis-armament of old weapons and an overal reduction in numbers of weapons.  As a result most modern (U.S.) weapons are very new, and of idiotic power, the average yield of a weapon in the seventies was around 50 kilotons, but today is closer to 75 megatons.  And no, I did not miss-tate that, this is information that is not classified in any manner, and was freely discussed in several magazines, news articles and the U.S. Army's NBC training.  Also, most modern  nuclear devices are vastly cleaner than advertised, and clean-up methods exist that can reduce a detonation zone to background levels in mere months.

I've always thought that earth needs a good alien invasion to bring all the countries together, because I honestly can't think of any other way to make them stop fighting other than make them fight something that would be genocidal monsters.
