Just read through the comic that originated the Nuzlocke run. I spent too much time reading that.

Funny story with Metroid. I inherited an NES a couple years back and seven or eight games with it; I had the first three Mario games, Duck Hunt, a few I don't remember, and the original Metroid game. I hadn't heard of the game before, so when I read the instruction manual, I thought Samus was a dude for years until I looked up a walkthrough of the game on the internet.

It's like the original release of the game, ya know?

She's supposed to take her helmet off at the end of the game, revealing her gender. Then again, it's 8-bit pixels, so it's probably hard to tell anyway. I remember playing another relatively obscure NES game called Faria where I wasn't aware that the main character is female until it's specifically stated right after the first dungeon. I guess that's what you can expect from an 8x8 pixel sprite.

It's mentioned because the first dungeon has you rescuing a princess, and the king said that ordinarily whoever rescued the princess would marry her, but since you rescued her, and are female, you can't(no same-sex marriage back then, obviously), so they throw you a feast with the main course being caviar. The caviar turns out to be poisoned, and for some reason you, the guest of honor, didn't eat any, so the next chapter is finding an antidote.
