I'd realised after I'd done it that it needed rewording. I meant the ones around here were like that. The ones teachers made you watch were worse.

The only shows better than Reading Rainbow when I was a kid were COSMOS (Carl Sagan, yo!) and Long Ago and Far Away which was basically the same as Reading Rainbow, but featured James Earl Jones doing the reading.

Over here they WERE failures. Kids went one of two ways:
Didn't pay attention because they didn't like reading
Didn't pay attention because they read already and found reading more fun.

Oftentimes, there were cartoons that went along with the stories, and the actor in question was the narrator.
