Why doesn't everyone carry pocketknives?
Some of us are more dangerous without the knife?
Yeah, pocket knives would make awful defensive weapons. Between most of them not locking the knife firmly into place, them time spent actually pulling the knife attachment out (which for most pocket knives requires both hands), and the very short reach, you would be just as well off just punching someone in the face and running like hell. Or my personal favorite, wielding whatever keys and pens are in my pocket like makeshift brass knuckles, aiming for the eyes, and running like hell. Or best of all, just paying them the $10 in your pocket, since med bills are expensive.

Again, don't carry a pocket knife for defense. Carry it as a tool.

In Canada, We don't carry knives. We carry axes. And free health care.

Pocket knives are specifically made so it cannot be a weapon.

Then of course there's the spring loaded ones, which are illegal in many places.

This is why they're encouraged to have one.

I think you guys may have different concepts of a pocket knife to me. I can get a knife from my belt into my hand, open, in about six seconds (this only takes one hand), and the blades can get up to ~5 inches in length, locking in place properly.

This does not change the fact that they are sucky weapons for all the other reasons.

in about six seconds
For someone who knows what they're doing, that's about 12-16 hard punches. If you don't believe that, look up "boxing shoeshine" on YouTube. No knife for me, thanks.

That's part of the reason it's a sucky weapon. I was just pointing out that for someone who knows what they're doing, opening a knife is not slow or unwieldy.

If I were going to knife someone with a pocketknife, I'd try and remain outside of punching distance until it was ready for use.
Then again, that wouldn't be possible if taken by surprise. I'd much rather a set of knuckledusters, but obviously those are hard to buy anywhere. :P

I drew myself a new avatar this morning (at 2AM). :P

On the knife discussion, I collected weapons for a bit and could draw, lock and slash a folding knife in one motion. Mind you that having your hand at the side is a good way to let them have a free shot at your face. If rushing someone it's a viable tactic, but the only time in self-defense you'd want to rush forward with a knife would likely be if they have a gun.

The same as above, except as fast (or faster) than a switchblade. No joke. The new model SAKs (Swiss Army Knives) have a thumb-hold that sticks out a bit, and can be used to open and close it one hand. I have literally practiced until I can draw it faster than someone else can draw a switchblade. It helps that, as a prerequisite for allowing them to carry knives, boys are required to demonstrate care and safe usage of pocketknives (as well as hatchets and camp saws), so there's always knife care materials around for opening and sharpening. Also, fishing campout is today, but we don't leave until this evening. Wish me luck!

Anyway, a happy: that moment in TF2 when you feel like you're doing poorly and you look at the scoreboard and HOLY CRAP YOU'RE BEATING EVERYONE ELSE! Truly, I am become Super-Accurate Scout, Destroyer of Pub Servers. Also, got a strange scattergun. Squeeeeee! It's up to gore-splattered now (I got it about a week ago).

It's slow and unwieldy compared to not drawing anything at all.
I will keep my vote firmly in the run away or punch/throw/shove down and then run camps.

Oh yeah, if I got mugged I'd be all for one of giving them what they want or popping them one in the nuggets and fleeing.

Anyway, happy: if you misspell a long word that isn't in LibreOffice's dictionary, it suggests antidisestablishmentarianism.

Huh. Pretty cool.
Anything in particular you are studying over there?
Green energy. Having traversed all over the city now, I can safely say you see the strangest things around here. Most of my group was unwilling to even look around, which is ridiculous, as it took us no small amount of cash to get here.

The internet is pretty terrible, so updates, if anybody wants them, will have to be fairly scarce. On the other hand, the food is great, and we haven't even been to the night markets yet. I'm going to have to see if milk tea is sold anywhere in the States, because if so I might have a new favorite drink.
