Sometimes I even sleep with socks on, but not usually.

Socks have thus far proven insufficient. The heel in every pair I've tried wears through in under 10 wearings (1 in the weakest cases, though), and the new pair of boots isn't breaking in as well as I'd hoped - my actual fleshly heels are wearing away now. I wore a hole in combat boots within 6 months. I am where footwear goes to die.
