I got invited to apply to the NHS!

This actually happened about a week ago, but I have just now realized what a huge freakin' deal it really is. If you'd like to review and comment on my essay, it will be below.

If I told them of the four Pillars of the National Honor Society, most people would immediately tell me that I most exemplify the Pillar of Scholarship, given the absence of a Pillar of Extreme Obnoxiousness or a Pillar of Snack Consumption. While my intelligence is probably one of my best traits, I did not come by it through hard work and long hours of grueling study. I do not exemplify the idea of Scholarship as much as others might. However, there is a Pillar that I can say that I represent. I am, in fact, a member of an organization that makes this Pillar one of its major tenets.

The Boy Scouts of America exemplifies Service. The oath that Scouts say at every meeting has three points: duty to God and country, duty to others, and duty to self. The twelve points of the Scout Law include that a Scout is 'helpful' and 'kind'. The Scout slogan is 'do a good turn daily'. Scouts regularly help their community with service projects, such as working for food banks and caring for community property. My troop's most recent project was repainting the halls of local housing developments.

I am a senior and high-ranking member of this organization. I am just one step away from receiving the coveted rank of Eagle Scout, which involves planning, fundraising for, and executing a major service project. Up until recently, though, I have felt bored and tired of Scouts. There was virtually nothing for me to do. However, a number of young boys from an underprivileged area joined the troop recently. Being the only available senior member, I was assigned to lead them. (In Scout troops, boys are arranged into 'patrols', which are each led by an older boy.) Being able to help these boys learn the ropes of Scouting has made me get interested and involved once more.

The Pillar I may need to improve is, ironically, Scholarship. Although I am in possession of an impressive intellect, I was homeschooled from a young age, and so never learned many study skills. The first semester of my freshman year was an abrupt wake-up call. I have already begun to improve this Pillar with help from my teachers, by writing down my homework in a day planner and confirming it afterwards. I hope that if I am accepted for this signal honor, I will be able to continue to improve this pillar.
