GO's right. Abusing the stock market for fun and profit is practically ethical compared to mucking around with established history.

Has anyone ever considered that the 1%ers might just be time travelers?

Too bad it wouldn't work.
Why?
Because I'm going to wait for a bit longer, maybe a century or two, and then go back with that technology and help the Romans dominate the universe.

4) Buy a bunch of tulips in modern day. Go back to the 1630s and sell off a few dozen per day. Laugh at human stupidity. Exploit all other relevant bubbles, like the dotcom, rhodium, and the stock market in the '20s. Weep at human stupidity.

I'd go back and save the Library of Alexandria.  Probably the single best thing I could do for benefitting humanity as a whole.

Maybe while saving it, you accidentally knocked over a candle, setting the whole place on fire.

Or cause some long series of events that prevents the discovery of penicillin.

Playing the stock market would be a horrible idea for maximum gains, since the startup capital would be much too high for the maximum rewards. I'd buy lottery tickets. :P

That said I'd be hesitant about changing the distant past, in case the universe turns out to not like paradoxes. If I did decide to go back to someplace like the Library at Alexandria I'd probably recover everything that was lost by transporting it with me to the present rather then just leaving it in the past (you could exploit time travel to literally spend several days grabbing things from the moment before they were consumed by fire, working alongside several hundred copies of yourself).

I think I'd support Napoleon with technological and historical know-how - he pretty much was the last dictator that didn't make life hell for all those he conquered.
Okay, he did make life hell for many of them, but that could be avoided rather easily. Plus he was an actual progressive!

It would also forever put to rest those "cheese-eating surrender monkey" jokes. Those annoy the hell out of me and as far as I know I'm not actually French.

Meh, we'll think of something else. And if one could push through truly democratic reforms, the conquered territories would eventually take over France...

Well, you could get the capital by investing in the bubble, then coming back with more cash to invest again.

Way easier: Transport gold back, transport the same gold again moments before you transported it the first time, etc. End result: A pile of gold where there was none before.
