Flystrike: the most horrifying thing that could possibly happen to your pet.

Confirmed.  Happened to a cat friend of mine when I was a kid.

I used to be pretty afraid of a type of tapeworm that infects foxes in temperate regions. That shit's nasty, and you can pick it up by eating wild berries.

You mean Echinococcus Multilocularis? That thing that, on the first glance, behaves exactly like cancer, except it cannot be treated like one?

Yup. Fuchsbandwurm (fox's tapeworm) it's called in Germany.

Yeah you basically have to never go outside, touch water that didn't come out of a municipal tap, or eat anything that wasn't vacuum-wrapped in cellophane.

other than the cellophane this sounds like a marvelous idea and i'm all for it

are you going to provide a clinical trial with all of my groceries being provided vacuum wrapped in cellophane, a bunch of municipal taps and an apartment that i'm never going to have to leave and check if i have such a tapeworm in like 30 years or what

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

And now I'm terrified of food.

If no specific therapy is initiated, in 94% of patients the disease is fatal within 10–20 years following diagnosis.[6]

Currently, benzimidazoles (such as albendazole) are used to treat AE: only halt their proliferation and do not actually kill the parasites, side effects such as liver damage
2-ME2, a natural metabolite of estradiol, is tested with some results in vitro: decreased transcription of 14-3-3-pro-tumorogenic zeta-isoform, causes damage to germinal layer but does not kill parasite in vivo
Treatment with a combination of albendazole/2-ME2 showed best results in reducing parasite burden[7]
Despite the improvements in the chemotherapy of echinococcosis with benzimidazole derivatives, complete elimination of the parasitic mass cannot be achieved in most of the infected patients, although there have been studies that indicate that long-term treatment with mebendazole may cause the death of the parasite.

hey now, you'll survive with albendazole / mebendazole / liver transplantation.
