In dutch it'd go:
a, two, three, celebrate, vixen (if you'll allow vijf into wijf), six, sieve, consider, nine, ten, elf (like the pointy eared bastards), twelve, of-ten, featherten (or springten).

Well, it happens in Chinese because of the limited phoneme range. It's a tonal language, and there's only a hair over 400 different "sounds" if you omit tone. Thus the reason that puns are a thing of beauty in Chinese, because almost every word sounds *exactly* like six or seven other words (minus tone) and close to dozens of other words. Technically "four" and "death" have different tones, so they're not quite the same but close enough to make people uneasy. it's a bit like rhyming Cockney, I suppose -- after a long enough association, "four" becomes a cipher for "death".

Most of the rest of the East Asian languages share this feature because they were all influences heavily by Chinese, similar to how most of Europe was influenced (or directly derived) from Latin. The reason Japanese has two words for four (and most of the other numbers are like that as well, IIRC) is that one is the "native" Japanese word (yon) and the other is the Japanized loanword (shi, derived from Chinese si).

In English, we sort of have this with a few numbers. We mainly use the Germanic-derived two, but also use the Latin-derived deuce and duo in some contexts.

EDIT: And this is totally thread-relevant, because linguistics, history and anthropology make me happy. :D

More linguistics. One of the guys in my class had to say "thirty-six books". He is not great in English pronounciation, so this came out as "dirty sex books".

I got the job, I got the jooooooooooob! Wooooo!

I'll come crashing back to earth soon because it's still part time and I take a substantial pay cut, but I'm going from 5-8 hours a week to 25-40+ hours. Woooooo!

Congrats!

I had my first onboarding conference call for my new job a little while ago, and I'm fucking terrified! I have to submit budgets and schedules and things! I feel like a little kid wearing grown-up clothes and hoping really hard that no one will notice.

I'm...basically doing the same thing as what I did before (customer service), but for a brand with a yellow tag instead of a blue circle with two letters. I want to get into a position where I can do what you do, RedKing, but I dicked around for 10 years after high school instead of going straight to college and now it's a long, difficult uphill battle.

Sounds like how I felt at the prom.
But you weren't worried about getting pay cut, were you?

I'm still with the blue circle with two letters. And trust me, I don't even quite know how I got this job. I did impress the hell out of my last boss and a lot of people at the Bureau, but the leap from tech support to project manager....it's like my ex-father-in-law who started off as a chef for IBM and wound up an SAP programmer.

On the plus side, I'm now sitting through a big conference call for the whole account, and they sound like they have even less idea what's going on.  :P

I had somebody talk to me today and then was all "Hey, are you on Bay12?" and I was like "Yup." and it was fun.
But it also means that my Internet identity may be too close to my real one. Hmmm...
