It's all about those telomeres actually. If you can keep those fixed, the human body can usually keep the rest of the DNA errors in check.

Plants have a different biochemistry. Much slower, for one.

Another reason they live so long is that they can survive rotting from the inside out. The Oldest parts die, while the young exterior continues growing.

Anti-aging and Negligible Senescence are good stop-gaps, but they don't do away with accidents like having a durable brain in a hard-shell sturdy location, connected to avatars would.

I am a fan of Aubrey de Grey, of course. I just hope he figures it out before he can't use it, the guy's already... uh, grey. :P

(I've thought about these ideas for years, since at least 15~ I'm always looking for more information, but the skimmable top I've already mostly discovered, like anti-aging and the like)

On a side note, google suggests that yews don't have telomere regeneration, but that some Jews do. Or at least, partial regeneration.

We can now coax mammal bodies into a state of torpor. Something akin to suspended animation could be on the horizon.

Cool, huh?

You see "Cool" is a joke because it lowers the homeostatic temperature of an organism and I'll just be over here.

Everyone has telomere regeneration to an extent. Otherwise your replicating tissues would wear out pretty fast (as you might guess). That's why there's such a thing as telomerase encoded in your DNA in the first place.

A study that focused on Ashkenazi Jews found that those that live the longest inherit a hyperactive version of telomerase that rebuilds telomeres.[24]

Exactly. Turns out really old people tend to have an hyperactive version of said gene.

'Course, apparently we can't just inject a whole bunch of telomerase into people to cure aging, because cancer.

Fucking nature, making easy immortality impossible. :I

Very interesting indeed. I'm directly descended from at least one Ashkenazi woman, and my family is notably long-lived....

Actually, in mice retrovirally injecting telomerase genes didn't cause any noticeable rise in cancer, but significantly improved lifespan.

But yeah, telomerase reactivation is one of the mutations that's needed for cancer to happen.
