Before one seeks enlightenment, rivers are rivers and mountains are mountains.
While one is seeking enlightenment, rivers are not rivers and mountains are not mountains.
After one has achieved enlightenment, rivers are truly rivers and mountains are truly mountains.

Today in "cognates you'd never thought were there: homework edition":

Persian zæn, Russian žena, English queen, first two mean "woman".
Russian dom, Latin domus, both "house".
Persian dokhtær, Russian doč, "daughter".
Latin capere "take, seize", English have.
Persian či, Latin quid, "what".

Interestingly, Persian bæd, with the same pronounciation and meaning as English "bad", is not cognate...and Latin "habere" is not cognate to English "have" despite having the same meaning. Somehow, I'm taking three languages at once and maintaining a fourth and it's easy.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

<ah-double-snip>
Interesting...
See, the way I've always seen koan's is that they're essentially all about the basic principles of Buddhist philosophy. That is to say that Buddhism tends to be very heavily individualistic, spirituality is a journey everyone makes on their own, though you may encounter and journey with other people along the way, you take every step yourself. And also that buddhism and the buddha state that everyone should eventually seek to attain, is not something that can just be given, it has to be found and earned.

Hence the Koan's their purpose is to tell you things without really saying anything. Dropping hints, but not giving you the answer, because the answer is something that can't be given, it's a state of nothingness where the mind ceases to be attached to the material world and drifts beyond it, and one that can only be obtained over many lifetimes. The Koan's are supposed to provide hints at how to get to this state, and are supposed to be confusing to make the student question and doubt themselves, their teachers, and what they have been taught.

That's just the general way I've looked at them.

Well after a chat with some people I am feeling a lot more confident in writing female characters.

The difficult is always that I honestly feel, whether irrational or rational, that they are held to a higher standard. Though after giving my most outlandish female character descriptions and stories and hearing how, just on face value, they weren't terrible... makes me understand, internally, that while there will always be people who want female characters who fit only a very narrow idea of how a progressive female character can be (See, real women don't wear dresses)... It isn't something that applies to everyone.

I need to make a character first.

I found a backup of a project I thought I had lost completely when my old hard drive went kaput, it feels so incredibly nice to know that I didn't lose all that bloody work

Today I was wandering around town like the bored college-student-whose-classes-won't-start-for-another-two-weeks I am, and happened to meet a group of what appeared to be junior high cross country runners while waiting for a crosswalk. It's that time of year. I noticed that all of them had atrocious running form. Legs were flailing out to the sides on the pushback, their arms were barely moving or just rotating axially, and so forth. So while we waited (it was a major road with 3-4 minute waits being standard) I showed them how to keep their arms and legs straight on to maintain momentum, told them why it worked that way, and explained why efficiency is important in running. You can spend the same amount of energy and go 10% faster, which for some of them could be 45 seconds off each mile. When we parted ways, most of them were running straight and efficiently. I guess these past 7 years of blood, sweat, lactic acid, and adrenaline have taught me enough to teach kids a little bit, and that made me feel happy today.

The print is only a third of that price, it's the framing and shit like that that costs money. For example I am having a signed poster framed at a local store. With non-reflexive glass, a frame (albeit a bit special, its a red metal frame.) and a passepartout and it will cost me about $140.
