Is the sad thread the only popular thread to last this long without an active OP? I know the happy and rage threads need to be kept in line occasionally.

It is oddly mellow in there normally, now that you mention it. Tough that you said that I feel a bit worried about how Janet hasn't been seen for 4 months.

Reading Buddhist koans. I love these things, they're full of lots of interesting and eclectic stories, including many tales of masters who became students upon realising they were not yet ready to teach others, and still more elaborate stories about how people became Buddhist monks or became enlightened.

These include things like the story of a gambling addict who becomes a monk and eventually a master because of the nature of his gambling addiction. Or the story of the monk who diligently took care of his mother without complaint, and who's mother eventually becomes a nun herself because he is being made fun of for it.

Or the various stories of how various zen masters died.

Or this little snippet about enlightenment here:

When Banzan was walking through a market he overheard a conversation between a butcher and his customer.

"Give me the best piece of meat you have," said the customer.

"Everything in my shop is the best," replied the butcher. "You cannot find here any piece of meat that is not the best."

At these words Banzan became enlightened.

After hearing so many stories about people taking years or even decades to attain enlightenment, I just burst out laughing at this one. I half expected him to walk into the butcher's shop and ask the butcher to make him one with everything after the end of the koan.

I'm actually fine. Just took a break from this place as I sorted some things out. I'd been getting so stressed out that just coming here annoyed the piss out of me.

Right now though? Dunno, things seem just fine so maybe Ill hang around again. Ill admit even when I was annoyed there was a bit of me that missed this place. So I have no idea.

Genuinely surprised this topic wasn't locked in my absence to be honest. Did literally NO drama or bullshit happen here these past months? Well here as in this topic, not the whole board.
