He is so famous that his work appeared on the French Literature AP exam one year, and he's a REALLY American author; he's had big movies made of multiple novels and blah blah blah he is AMAZING

I sent out something like 10 fanletters this summer, because I wanted to, to authors and TV people who had meant a lot to me.  Didn't ask for anything in return or something like that, just sent some letters of appreciation.  To Mr. Irving I sent a little note about reading his work to keep me distracted in a big house one winter when the heat was out and I had no contact with other human beings (true story, it was pretty much the only thing that kept me sane).  Well, he sent me a rather non-descript postcard thanking me for the note back, but it's written and addressed by him by hand and signed with his first name only.

So that is pretty fucking boss.
