So I'm apparently enrolled in a D&D game that starts in a couple of weeks... After some discussion I'm apparently going to be a cleric, now to figure out what kind. Anyone got any ideas for a good cleric optimisation?

It doesn't even have Fresh Prince of Bel Aire

American Netflix also does not have that.

Optimization-schmoptimization. Go nuts, have fun, and do what you feel like doing. That's my One Sacred Rule for games like D&D.

However, if optimization is fun for you, pour all of your skill points into the skill(s) that provide healing, and let the others in the party bash up on enemies. I've found (in 4E, at least) that characters who pour all of their skill points into one or two skills needed for their class wreck shop. If the party has enough people to cover all of the bases, the risk of having highly-specialized characters is essentially non-existent.

See if you can convince your GM to let you play a bear or a head of cabbage or something.

Or if you wanna be less "ridiculous fun" you could be a dwarf who spends more time bashing things than healing things, that could be fun. Sounds fun.

For some reason when i picture an intelligent head of cabbage i hear him as having a stereotypical gangsta accent.

I've always had a thing for making monster race characters.  If I can't do that, then I'll usually just play human.

What if your party gets split up or something?

I can provide you with more technical help. However, first and foremost, you want to be having fun, so if you have a concept in mind already, it'd be better for you to play than even the most blatantly too-powerful Clericzilla I could suggest. Anyway, this is the best walkthrough I can think of, but it's all standard boilerplate stuff. You should feel free to make decisions counter to it in the name of fun, especially if you're not playing with a bunch of optimizers, or if you're aware of the consequences of the decision and are okay with it anyway. Assumes 3.5, I'm rubbish for anything else.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

It doesn't happen a lot in meatspace 4E games, at least in the ones I've seen. And even if it does, every class has some combat prowess, which is amplified by their specialized skills. It's just a matter of dealing damage faster than the enemy.

Also, I built a new MtG deck, Bearforce One. I think this is the deck that will finally beat my friend's Storm Crow deck.[/obscure joke]

Is bearforce one related to flying bears because if it is I'm fortifying my house for the bearpocalypse.

No, just the regular kind. Flying bears would be too terrifying to imagine, and also require two colors, which is just silly in a silly deck.
