Both seem to be nice people but oh man do they ever both look and sound exactly like a Hollywood stereotype.

Stereotypes exist for a reason. The problem is when people expect nothing but the stereotype.
I get into arguments about this all the freakin' time! On the plus side, I get to tell people they have stereotypes about stereotypes.

The thing about stereotypes is not all things are stereotypes. Even accurate things can be mean... :(

Also true.

And some stereotypes can be because of indirectly casual relations, which is hard to describe without sounding (pick one: racist, sexist, bigoted, other[please describe]). Like saying that black people are more likely to play basketball, because a higher percentage of the black population lives in urban areas and basketball is more popular in those areas.

Note: the above is not meant to be racist.

I'm almost tempted to start a thread discussing stereotypes. It's an interesting subject.

I'd participate to muddy up the issue with specific generality arguments

Basically don't assume things about people just due to a stereotype, especially potentially confrontational things.

Also remember stereotypes are correlations (and potentially incorrect ones, but anyway), not causes. "Black people play basketball more than white people" is fine, but if you append "because they're black" then you're racist. The actual causes are elsewhere.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Meh.  I say y'all and all y'all (mostly the first one).  I also say "dude" and "bro" a lot... all of them unironically.  My English is the worst.

This is mostly because I try to give a more relaxed impression than I would naturally.  I'm apparently disturbingly intense, to the point where it often bothers people.  So I throw in a bunch of stuff to change the signal/noise ratio.

Missed this earlier because I was at work:
Kentucky is the best state. You all can suck it.

I'm happy because apparently there's a B12er in my state.

Coolness.

I'm pretty sure Flying Dice is too, so that makes three of us.

Which is kinda what I'm saying. Statistically speaking, if you take ten random black people, more than half of them will live in a metropolitan area. By far, basketball is the most popular sport in metropolitan areas. So there is an indirect causation, but not a direct one.
To summarize:
Being black does not make you genetically predisposed to being good at basketball.
However, being black does mean that you are more likely to live in an urban area.
If you live in an urban area, you are more likely to like basketball.

Is there a difference between an indirect causation and a correlation? I honestly don't know.

I say y'all all the time, and I'm Australian. I figure, if the American South comes up with a legitimately useful usage of a word that avoids the ambiguity inherent in using 'you' for plural and singular, may as well give it to them.

I also say 'mate, but only really with strangers i.e. when I'm at work. Also only to men, generally.
