I'd like to make a continuation from the sad thread:

In the sad thread I was just musing on if I should ask for the phone number of this cute girl. After summoning up all my guts, I decided to follow Solifuge's advice and just be blunt about it. And hey, it worked!

-snip-

I know, I'm amazing, and you're welcome. :3

But seriously, I'm glad to hear it! And you should try to hold yourself a little more responsible for your successes here. It's not just "good luck", but also your decisions and actions that are leading you to good things happening in your life.

As far as the "waiting too long" thing, don't worry about it. Weekdays are usually busy for folks, so waiting to get together on a Friday, or on the weekend, is totally cool. Also, I can tell you from personal experience, worrying about the past or future won't change those situations, or make them better. Just like you can't cross a bridge until you come to it, you can't affect anything but the present; the place you're at right now. Worrying about things can help you prepare for them, but it won't change them... so if you must worry, make sure you're worrying in constructive ways!

Also, I don't know much about Tracfones. I've been considering getting one myself, because I don't use a cellphone enough to make the $60+ monthly expense for a basic plan necessary... but if you can do it, texting can be super-handy. Sometimes you just want to send out a simple message, a general reminder for a get-together, a short check to see if someone is interested in something, or want to get a message to someone without interrupting their workday. In those cases, texting can be a superior option.

Yeah, thanks Solifuge, I really owe you one. Maybe I should just listen to you more often.

But damn, this is a whole new world of things I need to learn, and fast, if I want to avoid making myself look like an idiot.

I've had a Tracfone.  I'm pretty sure they can :D
Yeah, they can. The only downside is that they burn minutes pretty fast if you're a frequent texter. That, and it takes 0.3 minutes for every message you open or send, so if you're obsessive about keeping numbers round... :s

I suppose that's both great and terrible. Great because now I have this medium open to me, I just need to obtain a measure of skill in it, and my forever alone lifestyle has endowed me with a mountain of rollover minutes to use at my leisure.

Terrible because I've inadvertently lied to her about my texting ability, and the fact that I let that slip that I don't text might force her to make the obvious inference that I don't have 'normal-people' social ability. I'll need to rectify this quickly somehow.

I've been in a flurry of research and speculation as to how this texting thing works in society. Supposedly I should've texted her right away? Damn I'm not sure. And apparently this is a really normal and common thing that happens everyday, and it's existence has just flown over my head until now. It feels as though I'm a warrior and I've finally gotten the courage to charge into battle, only for my opponent to ask "Uh... Where's your weapon bro?", and then respond "What's a weapon?" and now I need to Macgyver something to get my footing again before I get brained and die instantly. I was happy but now I'm not so certain.

This is stressful, everywhere I look on the internet for advice it seems that, from first contact, it's some sort of struggle to avoid having the initial rapport wither and die. I was hoping to approach this in a more leisurely kind of way believe-it-or-not.

It's not a lie if you didn't know the truth.  You be you.  Take it easy.  Be honest.

Seriously, once you figure out the first one it's not that hard to figure out more.

Supposedly I should've texted her right away?
AFAIK waiting (less or up to) a  week can only make you seem more interesting. OTOH it can make you seem disinterested. OTOH you may seem too desperate when texting her right away. OTOH etc etc.

I just realised that all my social successes were lucky (In your situation, I did not text for a week because I was busy doing stuff, and the fact that I did that is what actually made her interested in me (6.5 yrs now and we're getting married in august), as the information that you provide (and any sane person could never acquire) is just too little to know what to do exactly when. So my only tip is: wing it, everyone else does, and nobody really knows what to do in situations like these.

But I am genuinely impressed by the fact you actually asked for her number. I've never been able to do that. You are awesome. Also, what Vector said.

I'd like to make a continuation from the sad thread:

In the sad thread I was just musing on if I should ask for the phone number of this cute girl. After summoning up all my guts, I decided to follow Solifuge's advice and just be blunt about it. And hey, it worked! When I asked and she's like "Sure!" and just hands it to me, I have to almost physically restrain myself from appearing awestruck. How does luck like that even work? With surviving my tumultuous car troubles, getting an amazing job out of nowhere, and now this, it's starting to feel like it's only the raw brute force of an unstoppable wave of good luck that is finally pushing my life out of the dismal pit it's resided in for so long.

Back to the matter at hand though, I know that this is just like, the first step (but it's a big first step, I'm so hyped about it!) and that everything went over well. I also gave her my cell phone number, though I'm not sure how prudent that was since it basically never has any service. Also, I was so caught up in the moment of summoning my courage that I forgot something: that with how my job is taking up basically all the time, the very earliest I'd be able to call her, realistically, would be Friday. Is that too long a wait to follow up on something like that? My gut thinks so, but I'm simply not sure... I might be able to drum up a short conversation earlier if I make clever use of my breaks at work, but I hear I should wait a few days before trying to make phone contact.

Maybe I should invest in a phone that can actually text message. She mentioned it, but I'm not sure if my little tracfone is up to it. I said that it wasn't, and I'm sincerely not sure if that's the case, I've never had to text someone before! Like really, I'll have to experiment to see if Tracfones can infact text other people. Oh man, I hope my disdain for texting technology hasn't prematurely killed my chances. Holy shit I have to quickly deduce the exact relevance of texting in the world of social networking and it's role in culture at large.

I'm simultaneously happy about my little success, and dreading that I've done something irreparably stupid that put the entire dialogue on the wrong foot.

I'll tell you a secret.

There is no such thing as good or bad luck. The correct terminology for that is your choice :P

Stop dreading all this Joshua, people do make mistakes - it's OK. You're a diplomatic guy, nothing's better than telling how you sincerely feel.

My happy? Philosophy. Something I never expected I'm good at...and mostly 99% of everyone else agrees that my niche is in writing. O_o

I got Netflix to go with my chromebook.  On one hand this means I won't be completing the 52 book challenge.  On the other I get to watch a bunch of kung fu movies and bob's burgers.

So that Wheel of Time thing, is it really that hugely epic and awesome? I'd like some fantasy books to hold me on while waiting for ASOIAF to come out. Was thinking about Discworld but the local bookstore has only some of the books, and there being well over fifty (?) of the various bits and pieces seems like quite an investment.

Wheel of time is nominally a single, very long, story. Though I skipped a book and didn't really notice untill halfway through the next one, so take that as you will.

Discworld, with the exception of one or two of them, are all single, self-contained, stories, and while it's generally recommended to read them in order of publication, it's not strictly necessary.
