To be honest, for me I feel like psych studies are an opportunity to be paid for practice figuring out how people are manipulating me, and exercising my observation skills.  It's really a value-added experience.

I'm more familiar with the concept as it relates to things like "haunted house" attractions, where you try to slip someone into each group that's rigged with blood squibs and prosthetics. So when people aren't really impressed with the monsters or the dude with the chainsaw, you have him lop off a hand from that poor guy who's totally not an actor working here, we swear!
