Buddha technically is a general term, even though it most often refers to the Supreme Buddha Siddhārtha Gautama. The thing is the Buddha is the First enlightened being in any particular generation.

It being that time of year, I was on my merry way to say farewell to this semester's paper friends and foes in exchange for a pocketful of banknotes. Midway there, I spied something on a football field ("soccer" for my fellow estadounidenses). Upon closer examination, it turned out to be a falcon gleefully disemboweling a small bird. I approached until we were separated by perhaps two meters. The falcon and I stared at each other for several seconds before he decided that his meal would best be had elsewhere, taking wing in a cloud of fine down.


A minute or two later, I found myself handing books over, one by one. As always, the goodbyes were mixed. "Fare-thee-well, Shakespeare. I wish you good fortune, Plato, that you may be defaced no further. Get the fuck out of my house, Anselm. You were better than I expected, Atwood. A shame more of you didn't survive, Anaximander. I pray I never see you again, Augustine. I hardly knew thee, textbook co-author. It's a good thing you wrote in a language nobody cared about, Kierkegaard."
