I guess it's kindof worth having the vote but it's not really a surprise or a good thing that no-one wanted to vote against the "keep the evil foreigners away from our internet bill".  Considering how many were in favour of SOPA and the like it seems more like a victory for xenophobia than open internet.

This isn't xenophobia fueled any way you cut it. At the most cynical, this is keeping Russia and China's power blocs from gaining more power over the internet. It isn't that they're foreigners, it's that they are against US interests.

And SOPA failed hard. The only reason it had as much support as it did was because of lobbyists pushing it. Congress got to see the public backlash from such things, though. I doubt they'll repeat that mistake with as much vigor.

Ultimately, this helps the free internet even if it was not entirely motivated by the desire to protect it, and I consider that a victory.

Exactly. I for one am more than willing to avoid misanthropic snarking about something which ended about as well as anything in politics can.

Incidentally, I was reminded of something wonderful today.

I just stared at the sky in Skyrim for a couple of minutes. So pretty...

If I didn't live in a city, I'd go look at the real thing. Even if it does lack the cartoonish exaggeration of some features, such as the twinkling you can't see in a still image >_________>

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Timed it: from the school of my kid, to sitting behind my desk at work with a cup of coffee: 7 minutes. And that includes cycling through snow.

I love my new office. Going to be hard on the waistline, though... Just lost my only source of exercise.

To be fair, the real thing rarely looks that nice. Milky way is just another monochrome cloud. (Unless you go into areas where it's really dark). Even then, I doubt there's purple.

Maybe not, but there is things like auroras and in really dark places you can see heaps of stars. Further out in space there's the pillars of creation.
