Well it's just a really silly and roundabout way of saying said person was a pretty close friend.

Sounds pretty much like some spy movie romance. Obvious thing to do would be blow up their apartment in an attempt to kill them, then make out with them like five minutes later, but that is too cliche. I prefer to kill their boss and assume his identity so that you can keep ordering hits on yourself, but know they are coming thus easily evading them. That way they are impressed at your apparent espionage skills.
