You'll be hard pressed to find vending missions with soda in any American school now-a-days. They think the kids are getting fat from them.

Funny thing is, kids ain't getting any skinnier. Where could the fatness possibly be coming from? Could it be, *gasp*, their own homes?!

... something about that exchange has left me with an inexplicable urge to strangle something small and fuzzy. Or maybe just someone's throat, I'unno.

I'm not sure why, but. It's there. Somehow. Some way. The fingers. They flex and grasp at the ungraspable.

For some reason, that seems like a very bad idea.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I can get a litre of soft drink for a dollar, or a sandwich, or two 70g bags of chips, or lots of other stuff.

Parent/teacher conference.  Got to listen to a good 15 minutes of praise for my kid on basically every quality: personality, intelligence, enthusiasm, and responsibility.  His only problem:  sloppy handwriting.  Feels good.  8)

I'm a firm believer that bad handwriting is a sign of intelligence. That's why mine is absolutely horrific.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
