That's really a rather fascinating encapsulation of the human condition.

New series of Red Dwarf is pretty great, I'm pleasantly surprised.

As am I - the other "newer" series have been a let down, but this one is fine so far.

EDIT: Also, this is relevant to a discussion we were having a while back.

I see mention of the IGDA there!  I'm pretty sure they're referring to the Indianapolis Game Developer's Association.  I met the founder of that group at Gencon a couple years ago, just as he was making the final arrangements for their first meetings.  I was supposed to be involved, but they never held meetings at times that were attendable by me.  So I ended up just observing from a distance.  It's just cool to see them mentioned somewhere unexpectedly like this.

This website is neat.  Thanks for the link.

So, D&D.

We hear something moving over in the grass by the side of the road. The druid stops and immediately turns into a bear. He then uses "Talk to Plant" to talk with the grass to try and find out what's moving towards us. The grass says its something like a snake, so the druid summons some fire right on the grass. The grass he could understand and speak to.

Queue five minutes of laughter.

Gonna watch the second ep tomorrow, the first was easily as good as seasons 1,2,7, and 8. :D

I have invented a more universal system of measurement, based on Planck times and lengths. Does anybody know how I would build a clock that measures out millichrons? (One chron is equivalent to 1048 Planck times, or about 15 hours. The clock face then needs to be one chron in its entirety, be divided into ten bits each measuring one hundred millichrons, and have a "minute" hand that travels around the clock once every decichron.) For those of you who are wondering, it has been approximately 1.8 megachrons since the birth of Christ, seven megachrons since the start of the Holocene, and forty kilochrons since the end of the Second World War.

It would be a completely useless gadget, of course. It would be even cooler to have a smaller clock, like one of those date-keepers, that measured out decachrons, hectochrons and kilochrons. I would of course have to have a start date for the calendar, else I don't know what time to start the clock!

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Start date is the day and approximate time you were born, because why not? It's your system.

The beginning of the Big Bang would be the logical place to begin.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
