As I always say. French is just bastardised Latin with a German accent.
Are the French and German accents really that similar? Well I guess that gros (French for fat) and groß (German for big) are pronounced similarly, depending on the dialect...

Ghost chilis are wonderful. From time to time, we have someone bring in a bottle of that stuff and go nuts.

I'd never thought of it before, but it's rather amusing that it works like this:

French: gros = fat
German: groß = big
American English: gross = EWW
:P

In other WTF, my boss responded to a completely serious work email with a 4chan meme. One that was totally appropriate to the content of the email.  ???

...But...but... Ordinador?

Directly from latin.

Unfortunately, Latin wasn't around to get to name computers ;)

Swedish: gross- = large amounts [of goods]
Real English: grocery?

So you're saying that instead of Spanish infiltrating English, English infiltrated Spanish?

That sounds Dirty. [/freudwasright][/opinifact]

Swedish: gross- = large amounts [of goods]
You mean like a dozen dozens or something?

No, like "grosshandlare" ( gross trader), somebody who buys large amounts of goods for cheap, what I assume would be the equivalent of... "grocer"? "Grocerist"? Except in English it has evolved to only have to so with food. Maybe?

Holy crap, that's where grocer comes from? Man, English etymology is exciting. It's the "where did we steal this from?" roulette.

Technically a Grocer was someone who would count or weigh gross (bulk aka loose non packaged) goods, such as salt or flour for a customer in the days before packaged goods stores.

Having a geeky father is very fun.

Watched Firefly, then Serenity, now watching Buffy.
