That'd be an idea. Send space probes out with the entire sum of our knowledge on them in these DNA hard drives. Something like 80% of it is pornographic. Hopefully whatever alien empire picks one up isn't a race of prudes :P

I doubt it. They will wonder why we spent so much time recording our bizarre mating rituals, though.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Science rules.

My mind is blown.  There's nothing else I can say.
Can't actually see the site (because news sites are invariably shittily coded pieces of shit that crash iPad safari), but the title alone sounds bloody awesome.

Now. When does it become commercially viable and able to be stuck into my computer? Also, transfer speed, degradation rate/life span, so on? What's the stats above and beyond massive storage, basically.
Basically, the speed is total crap, but its got good (AKA possibly hundreds of years) stability/lifespan if I am reading it correctly but the main thing is the  amount of storage posible, which is so massively dense (mainly because its 3D storage instead of 2D like our current storage) that a few grams of it could store all the encoded information in the world.

This makes me so happy, yay sci-fi coming true.
This prompts the question: How big is the internet?
Well, google alone uses something like 24 petabytes of space, I think? Thats already more than 700TB.

Wasnt 700TB 2.2 petabyte? (according to that article)

The scientists stored 700 TB of data in 1 gram of DNA, meaning they probably can store way more than just .7 PB. :3

Bytes don't use awkward imperial units for data, its all powers of 10. 2.2 PB is 2200TB.

2.2 petabits; a byte is eight bits. Bytes are denoted as B, bits as b. (e.g. MB vs. Mb)

Further more, there are arguments between whether the  next SI prefix step up should be 1000 times greater than the previous (is consistent with all the other ones) or 1024 times (makes sense in the context of computing) Sometimes you hear people talking about the latter kind as mibibytes or pebibytes etc., with the bi standing for binary.

holy fuck this video is the most hilarious thing i've seen in weeks

"Thank you; I'm getting used to it now."
*turns around and rolls over again*

I have not laughed out loud that much in quite some time.

Woah, who put all this happy here

~Meanwhile~

Just spent a day finally finishing the gardening. A decades worth of weeds grown upon itself, killing the original lavender bush that once resided there.
I used a multi-tool and a bread knife to clear it all.
It was over a month of hacking that I finally cleared enough to start regrowing plants in the allotment - this involved hacking apart a freaking coral garden that had attached itself to the fence.
Then finally, I reached Audrey. The biggest stem of the weeds.
I hacked at Audrey until there was nothing but a stump, and brought the shovel out.
But she wouldn't budge.
She lived there for 10 years and she wasn't going to move any time soon.
So I killed her.
I killed her with fire, oh so much fire.
I killed the mean green mother from out of space with all the fire I had.
And it was glorious.

Harvested the plums (what was left anyways), found some raspberries and blackberries growing on one of the fences (must've migrated from someone else's garden), gawped at the strawberry plant infestation and overjoyed at the mint leaf bushes. And not only have the sunflowers bloomed, but the lavenders have regrown elsewhere! And even better, managed to find two Mint leaf stalks that were growing in the way of the back door entrance which had to be removed, and I managed to uproot them and replant them in a pot to put up indoors. Now minty freshness should be available all year.
Ah, happy.
Brb, making some minty tea.

I'm pretty sure it is. The library of Alexandria has a giant server with a backup of a good part of the internet.

Loud Whispers is the current champion of this thread for making a Little Shop of Horrors reference with weeds in his garden. As well as having some delicious-sounding stuff growing.
