I cooked a hamburger myself for the first time without adult supervision.  (yes I AM 29)   It was delicious.  Slightly overdone and I was aiming for "normal" but I like my burgers a little burnt so that worked out.  Yay!

Try cooking stew-like stuff. With liquid, nothing will burn, and it's pretty hard to fuck up. Dice onions, cook 'em a bit, stick some mince (ground beef for all of y'all Murkuns) in and then a couple cans of tomatoes; basic bolognaise.

And novice sounds about right.  Dabbling is probably 'follow directions on the frozen pizza box' level, and adequate is probably 'don't set off the fire alarms cooking real food' level.
