I love Tolkien's work for all its bitter irony and complex allegory (which is undeniably there, no matter how much Tolkien denied it) regarding the nature and interactions of good & evil (good does not triumph over evil) and the evolution of civilization from something simplistic and harmonious with nature to something complex and parasitic.

Turin's story is my favorite.  The expanded story zombie published as Children of Hurin was very well done.

And yeah... my parents raised me on Tolkien.  The Hobbit was the first novel I ever read, at the age of 6.  Tolkien's work has been an incredible influence on my throughout my life.  I'm trying to do the same for my kids.
