Who says it has to hurt? Unless stated otherwise, I'm going to assume it's not childbirth every full moon. At most you would feel the horror of your conscious self being drowned by the beast within. And that's only as bad as you make it.

Keeping in mind how much growing can hurt when you do it a couple of cm/year too much, I say transformation would most definitely suck. Also imagine all the un-growing hair. And the teething! No wonder werewolves are madly rampaging, all that pain in one night.

Naw, you pretty much go into shock from all the physics-bending it takes to pull mass out of nowhere before the pain really kicks in.  So it's all cool.
