Well Toady has done a good job making his fantasy setting interesting... Instead of the noble, graceful beings that never eat meat, they are some what blood thirsty cannibals, and it it totally justified!

I'm generally okay with a fantasy pastiche of standard tropes, when the point of the story isn't to flesh out and explore the implications of a world. Sometimes I just want to run through a character driven story, and I just happen to like the fantasy setting as a backdrop. Subverting or otherwise avoiding cliches still tends to be a staple (or at least I try to make it one), but I'll have it happen through individuals rather than through the setting, if you see what I mean. The codification's fine, but only when you use it as a tool to skip steps that aren't what are important to your story - it's a bit like fanfiction, in that way. You can actually use it as an effective mechanism for doing what you're setting out to do, but you have to avoid letting yourself be trapped by it, and ensure you're choosing a setting whose assumptions actually do work for the story you're after.

I just think the "Elves are a Mary Sue race so let's re-interpret them as something unflattering" idea was initially worth a nod, but has gotten boring really fast.

I interpret elf as E.L.F (Enhanced Life Form) a breed of humans that have been augmented with cybernetics to a level where even their minds have under gone vast modification, leaving them cold and stoic. Their lack of biological parts has also increased their lifespans beyond that of normal humans, as well as their amazing strength and speed.

Playing Pokemon White, because I pretty much completely owned and gutted Pokemon Black.
Got up to the 5th gym in one day because I'm only using 3 pokemon: Samurott, Stoutland, and Excadrill.

Grinding is so unnaturally fast. This just doesn't feel right! I think maybe I should start over and do it "right" (aka how I played Black, extremely time consuming as compared to this, which is super fast and easy) this time.
