Retested and got 39,100 this time.

I'd always thought my flash-memorizing was useless for any long-term learning, but it appears that my mind compartmentalized the words into those that were useful (cantle, for which I had no equivalent term yet), easy to remember (puckish = HURRR BERSERK! CHARACTER, prig = prick, williwaw is fun to say), or fun (funambulist), got rid of ones which were stupid or ones for which I already had a large quantity of synonyms (sparge, pabulum, pother, etc.), and now I've expanded my vocabulary by a narrowly-defined handful of very specific words which skew my results on test.

But then, that's how I learned nearly every word I didn't get from reading novels for the last decade, so...

Yeah vocabulary can be weird. Like how there's the french-derived "legerdemain" even though there's the perfectly fine "sleight of hand". Or the previously metioned imbroglio which simply means "plot" and is a less funny wrod to say.

So, my boss came and visited my store today, and I thought I was going to get in serious trouble because I missed the last conference call. Turns out, he did too. He was busy playing Call of Duty. At least I was doing homework. :P

This would be because French > English even in England, up until the 1800s or so. So if you were some country bumpkin, you'd say "sleight of hand" or even "trickery". If you were an educated noblesse or noveau riche, you would quoth "legerdemain".

Do that and read through SCP Foundation, and toss in any possibility of them being real, but hidden from the public really well by the government and such, and you can quickly turn slasher flicks and such into something less worrying/scary (especially if you're in the middle of such a situation); or become even scarier than the villains themselves by being more savvy or crazier than them.

Which reminds me, I gotta come up with more things I'm not allowed to do in RPGs. That thread's starting to collect dust.

36,400 estimated vocab size. I'm going to go ahead and adjust mine downwards. I know lots and lots of those odd words like legerdemain, but did not know truck or van until 8th grade (everything was just a car).

34900 is what I got. There were some really weird words in there.

That is actually lower than my last vocabulary test when I was in 3rd grade.
