I feel much better about life, the universe, and everything - when I stop giving a shit.

I'm not sure if this is healthy, but it feels good and I'm sticking with it!

It snuck up on me as a coping mechanism when I was a young'un, and without realizing it I stopped giving a shit about a lot in life. That kind of withdrawal lead me on to a life both passive and reactive; it was easier to sail on through rough times, and I learned to be awfully rational in times where emotions ran high, but it didn't bring me much lasting happiness. Withdrawing from one's ability to care isn't a way forward; it's a way of emotionally procrastinating, putting off the troubles and pain we face until such a time as we feel a desire to tackle them. And if you keep at it, that desire rarely comes, leaving us with a mountain of emotional loose-ends and formative experiences that we don't integrate into our experience. Do it too long, or too extensively, and it'll leave you a hollow shell.

That said... there's a marked difference between "not caring about anything" and just "not sweating the small stuff". I'd say the later is wisdom, while the first goes too far; moderation in all things.

I have to say Kael those are the best words I'll ever hear.  I started giving the mentality a couple years ago and its treated me well.  I never would have been this happy otherwise.

Seeing my Mom in a car is like a nightmare and a half.  She's already a worrywart but in high speed vehicles it's even worse.

Seriously, today I was going to be like 10 minutes late to my class which didn't even bother me but my Mom seemed to be bothered by it more than the person who would even be effected by it!  The wonders!

Anyway, yeah this is pretty good.

I actually live quite close to a Naginata dojo (40 minutes walking, but that's a good warmdown after evening practice; and hell, I'd be carrying a 7-foot polearm home, so I'd hope that'd be a deterrent to any nasty people).  It'd be just once a week, and I'm strongly considering going.

Even better: it'd be old, pre-Meiji reformation, non-sportified naginata.  That is to say, naginatajutsu.

Hmm... =)  I do need some more exercise.

Well that practice interview went better than expected.  And my estimate for the number of petrol stations in the UK was within 15%!  And also I now have an estimate for the proportion of the world's water stored inside a single cow.
