20 steps to live like Squid

1.  Turn on your sick-as-hell bangin' rig
2.  Wait five minutes for it to start running programs, why is my sick as hell bangin' rig so slow?
3.  Play some GTA 4.
4.  GTA 4 is really slow
5.  Get mad
6.  Play GTA 3.
7.  Holy shit this game is so old, there's not even any ragdoll physics.  GTA 4 spoiled me, I can't play this shit.
8.  Play GTA 4 again.  Still really slow, the fans are about to fly out of the computer
9.  Check Coretemp
10.  Processor is running at 61C in the winter
11.  holy fuck turn off the computer before it explodes
12.  Open 'er up and see what the deal is
13.  Everything's fine, except the heat sink is 50% metal, 40% dust, 10% dog hair
14.  Spend like an hour trying to get the dust out from behind the fan because you don't have a screwdriver small enough to remove the fan and you don't want to remove the heat sink and have to reapply thermal butter
15.  Get it done
16.  Turn on your bitchin' rig
17.  Programs run as soon as you click the button
18.  Processor is 22C
19.  ???
20.  Profit!

I can't believe how long it's been since I've done that.  Right as I have all these brand spanking new games that seem to be taxing my graphics card.  Hmm.  I wonder if having no sidewall on my box is part of the problem?  I know it gets hot enough to cook with if I leave it on...

If theres no sidewall, can't you just peek in and see how much dust there is, Aqizzar?

You have to have all the walls on, the box is designed with proper airflow in mind and if you remove the wall you mess that up.

But yeah, dusting is great.  I can't believe how much better this thing is running now, it's like I just bought it.

Played way too much Killing Floor. That game is super hard solo, and it's hard done the way hard should be: hard because of a lack of skill, precision and finesse. Though a targeting reticule might help.

Thanks for reminding me to clean out my computer again. I think I waited long enough to clean it again. It's been starting to slow it's pace again.

EDIT:
I've taken notice to my redundancy again. :P

The most recent XKCD. That just brought a massive grin through the layers of exhaustion and lack of caffine.  :D

I also bought this
"Please note that since we have no means of testing, or data from Israeli manufacturer, we cannot guaranty degree of protection, against all possible sources of contamination, or how long filter will last under various conditions (denser contamination means less time). we can only guaranty that mask and filter are in new cond."

Smart disclaimer.
Someone in the reviews noted that some of the filters would be past due expiration, but that it still works for light contaminants such as tear gas - which is what I'm expecting to be hit with. Better prepared than stuck with say, a bandana or breathing through a shirt.

I am liking this PM work shift. Once my sleep schedule adapts, it will be tops.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Protip: Install slide out washable HEPA filters on your machines air intake.

Critical flaw: forget that you removed all the expansion slot covers when you were fiddling with graphics cards. Your filtered intake is no longer in the path of least resistance.
