Being surrounded by assholes does not make a depression any less of a depression, nor does it make low self-esteem anything else than low self-esteem. It's just a cause. It's like saying "before you diagnose yourself with cancer, make sure you are not surrounded by x-ray cameras" as if that revelation would somehow make your cancer go away.

You're correct.

But what I was saying is that you can be depressed because of those things without being medically depressed.  There is a difference.  Being down because you're in a bad situation just means you're in a bad situation, not that you need to seek professional help.  Many people don't understand this.  They just think being unhappy is a bad thing that should be treated like any disease.

I have to sigh at some people I know who think that being unhappy is unnatural and treat it like the plague. Sure it sucks, but it's part of living. (Yes I understand depression is different, but that's not what I'm talking about)
