And since that got me to browsing The Oatmeal...
This pretty much sums up why I hardly ever game online.
'Cept for the jet-skiing.
I usually stay away from online gaming more due to bad sportsmanlike conduct from their end; plus, regardless of my skill, I also am quite a popular target to bully. I don't have the slightest clue as to why (and that includes having my skills up to scratch). However, I recognize a name from a prior nemesis, and such a game (let's say like Unreal) comes across, I know where all my redeemers, sniper rounds, flak shots, biorifle globs, shock blasts will be aimed at. After a bit of practice, studying a map, or playing in a more familiar environment, I tend to return the favor plus interest.
Just ask my brothers in any deathmatching game. They used to destroy me in Doom and so forth, until I got my shotgun skills up, and learned where BFGs spawn. But BFGs were usually reserved for point-blank shame or when I get pinned/flanked by a team effort. Oh yeah, I also learned how to dodge BFGs and their unique splash damage effect which made me a nightmare against them. Unreal was no better. I also learned how to snipe Redeemers out of the sky. The
PCGamer Olympics mod (okay, so it tells about it; but you can find the download link elsewhere anyway) was also excellent practice for all my skills too. Try beating that monster in under 5 minutes. Harder than it sounds; but worth it for building up (or rebuilding) FPS skills in a jiffy.
Which reminds me, I gotta get back to deathmatching again. FO3 has gotten me lazy depending on VATS to score critical shots. Back then, I could headshoot with a pistol from 100m away sans zoom (a mod that allowed it proved so). We gotta setup a Bay-12 Unreal (GOTY/2k4) server.
